Ramesh to expose PNM ‘dirty linen’ today

FORMER Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj says he will expose Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s failure to bring “clean government” to Trinidad and Tobago when he addresses a mass meeting of sugar workers and cane farmers in Ste Madeleine at 2 pm today.

Maharaj told Newsday yesterday that he will show the population how the Prime Minister “has fractured the society in ways which have done irreparable harm” to Trinidad and Tobago and why Manning presides over “one of the dirtiest” governments in the country’s history. The former AG said the People’s National Movement (PNM) has proved its incompetence in dealing with all issues from the economy to crime and he will also outline the legal and political strategies required to solve these problems.

Maharaj disclosed that an announcement of a “new political vehicle” to revolutionise local politics will be made next year “when the time is ripe” and there are three committees currently working out the logistics. The former AG said several people both at home and abroad are interested in this “vehicle” and he will be leaving next week for New York to hold further talks with the latter. He stated that those interested include current and former members of the PNM and the United National Congress (UNC) and even a few former Government ministers. Maharaj said contrary to statements made earlier in the week by National Team Unity (NTU) founding member Trevor Sudama, “the organisation is there.”

He explained the reason why Sudama and other NTU members were unaware of his political activities to date was due to the fact that some of the matters currently under discussion are confidential. Maharaj added that NTU members will be brought up to speed at a meeting scheduled for October 5. He agreed with Sudama that NTU’s political base was not wide enough and hence the reason for  “a new political vehicle. Team Unity was formed on the base of the UNC,” Maharaj stated. However, he insisted that regardless of whatever manifestation this vehicle takes, NTU will be an integral part of it. Maharaj also said he will update the population on his recent trip to New York to meet with potential investors for Caroni (1975) Limited as well as unveil the legal and political strategies to ensure equity for all classes of workers and the people of TT as a whole.
