Alarming statistics
THE EDITOR: Trinidad is now the kidnapping capital of the world. Colombia I am sure has taken second place. When one compares the population, a little over 400,000 Indians and the number of them kidnapped already, the statistics become more alarming. Sure there have been one or two Afros kidnapped but Indian businesses are under increasing assault.
Indians are mainly interested in religion and culture. There is nothing wrong with that, however we are targeted and therefore we cannot ignore the enemies in Nissan B14 cars. Indians must focus on other means of survival or risk becoming another Fiji, Guyana, Uganda or Tanzania. Where are the non-religious organisations representing Indians in TT? Organisations that represent our causes are non-existent in TT. Organisations are important because they become the think-tank towards social change. Currently, there is a need for social action, but where are our leaders. Indians need to learn to write the Prime Minister, Minister of National Security, newspapers and how to use the radio as an effective means of clear and concise communication. A politician cannot ignore 20,000 mail arriving at his office. He cannot ignore people who get together and hold candlelight vigils for those who have been victims of murderers on the loose. He cannot ignore demonstrations and selected days when businessmen close their businesses and demand change. Instead, Indians are sitting and waiting for the UNC to regain power. This party will again ignore Indian wishes and focus on the creole class. The time for social action is now, but we must seriously consider our presence in the Caribbean, namely in Trinidad and Guyana.
