$100,000 bail for cop on arms charges

SUSPENDED police constable Nanan Balgobin appeared before Siparia Magistrate Lucinda Cardines-Ragoonanan yesterday, charged with possession of arms and ammunition. Ragoonanan was not called upon to plead since the charges were laid indictably.

The court heard that last Friday night, a party of police officers from the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) went to a house in Santa Flora to execute a search warrant. Arms and ammunition were discovered. When Balgobin appeared before a Justice of the Peace  at the same court on Saturday, he was granted $100,000 bail and told to return to court yesterday, to have the matter called by a magistrate. After the charges were read out by Magistrate Cardines-Ragoonanan, she upheld the JP’s bail and adjourned the matter to December 4.
