St Lucien Road closed all weekend

The inconvenience caused by the Vale View development project which residents of St Lucien Road, Diego Martin have had to put up with for the past few months, continues this weekend with the closure of St Lucien Road from Sierra Leone Road to Wendy Fitz-William Boulevard. The road will be closed from 6 am today to 6 pm tomorrow to facilitate the placing of a sewer main for the project.

In a public notice placed by Vale View developer Gowkaran Mahabir yesterday, it was revealed that the closure of the road is to facilitate excavation work for the purpose of installing a sewer force main. The ad appeared on page 18 of Newsday. When Newsday contacted the Diego Martin Regional Corporation yesterday, an official there claimed that the Corporation was not responsible for the work and knew nothing about Vale View. However, another source said the Corporation paid a site visit Thursday. Newsday was referred to the Ministry of Works yesterday by the Corporation. The Ministry claimed that WASA was carrying out the work, but WASA stated it was a private contractor, sub contracted by the developers of Vale View,  who was behind the installing of the sewer force main.

Newsday learned that the contractor  received the permission from all the relevant authorities to proceed with the installing of the sewer main. A WASA official told Newsday that WASA inspectors will be on hand to ensure that the work is carried out in such a way that the existing WASA lines and systems are not damaged. The WASA inspectors will also point out where the main manholes are located to facilitate the digging up operations. A senior police officer said yesterday that officers from the West End and Four Roads police stations will be on hand to ensure that residents who live along St Lucien Road will be able to get to and from their homes. St Lucien Road will accommodate one lane traffic, while all traffic will be diverted to the Diego Martin Main Road. Town and Country visited the site on Thursday after complaints from residents about the flooding being caused and the narrowness of the access road to the site. A report is expected to be made available on the project next week.
