From recreation to religion
THE EDITOR: It is interesting to note the problem brewing between Sat Maharaj and members of the Streatham Lodge community. For as long as I have known myself, and this is over 35 years, I have known for a fact that the said grounds were used for recreation purposes.
How this piece of property became the property of the Maha Sabha is anyone’s guess. It is also interesting to note that a recreation ground complete with cricket field in Aranguez has been converted over the past two years into a functioning worship centre. How could a religious group take possession of a recreation ground? Are we to say that it is now fair for religious groups to squat on or occupy any piece of property they see fit. Why is it that we have seen certain religious groups get away with murder and others made to suffer?
I am asking for a comprehensive report from the Government showing a breakdown of land acquisition and financial assistance given per religious group. One must remember also that there are some groups that may fall in the minority and their contribution to the economy of TT is almost the same as the larger groups’. This will definitely show that there is unfair treatment where certain matters are concerned. Lastly, to all religious leaders, please purchase your lands or at least have them transferred to your organisations. Illegal occupation of land is not in our belief system.
