Freak storm victims still await Govt help

THERE has been no word yet from Prime Minister Patrick Manning and the Self Help Committee regarding last Wednesday’s freak-storm which struck parts of Charlieville, Chaguanas, leaving behind damage to 12 houses, where roofs were ripped off by powerful winds.

Councillor for Charlieville, Falisha Isahak told Newsday yesterday, “the Chaguanas Mayor’s office still awaits a response from the two agencies with respect to sourcing financial aid for the affected victims, since the Borough Corporation wasn’t well equipped both financially and materially to handle such a disaster.” Isahak said in the meantime, the Chaguanas Borough Corporation was trying to source private help from corporate bodies within the Borough. She added that there was a positive response thus far, from the business community, but the Corporation is awaiting the fulfillment of the promises by members of the business community. Isahak said whilst some of the victims were able to repair the damage to their homes, the Borough was still using a small portion of its funds to assist the poorer victims, until Government and the Self Help Committee decide to intervene in the matter.
