St Mary’s College teacher found hanging

A college teacher was found hanging at a Diego Martin house yesterday. Dead is 45-year-old Michael de Silva, an economics teacher at St Mary’s College, Port-of-Spain. De Silva, who lived at Maraval, was found hanging from the rafters of an apartment located at San Diego Park, Diego Martin, at 10 am yesterday. According to police reports,  residents in the area reported a foul stench coming from the home and alerted police. The officers of the Four Roads Police Station had to break into the apartment where the partially decomposed body of the school teacher was found hanging. DMO Dr Pounder ordered the removal of the body, which was taken to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy was expected to be performed.

De Silva was last seen alive by the Principal of St Mary’s College Father Ronald Mendes on Friday. Snr Sup Quashie, Insp Thomas, Sgt Stephen and Sgt Ramsubhag along with other officers of the Four Roads Police Station are investigating the matter. De Silva, a former Fatima College student, had been teaching at St Mary’s College since 1982. He was unmarried and lived with his father who died in August. De Silva’s family lives abroad. Fr Mendes was unavailable yesterday, but Newsday learned that he will address St Mary’s students today on the teacher’s death.
