Explain this, Mr Sealy

THE EDITOR: We refer to the story headlined “Private Sector Cancer on UTC Board — Sealy” which appeared in the Trinidad Guardian on October 14, 2003.

While we understand his genuine concern for the company he once headed, we objet to the implications made by his statements. We believe Mr Sealy needs to further explain his criticisms of the private sector and its relationship with the Unit Trust Corporation. As an organisation that represents the private sector in Trinidad and Tobago, the Chamber does not consider our members to be “the cancer” that “threatens the health of the organisation”. They are an important ingredient in the elixir that has given UTC the verve and energy it has today. We advise Mr Sealy that it is because of private sector involvement and certainly a private sector approach to doing business, that the Unit Trust Corporation has achieved success.

The initial investment made by these members (35 percent of the initial $5 million) when the UTC First Scheme was established in 1981, has resulted in the rapid and successful growth of the company. Of course, this would also not have been possible without the forward-thinking leadership of its CEOs — both past and present, the strategies of UTC’s marketing department and the front line employees who provide service to customers. We consider the UTC, also a member of the Chamber, to be part of the private sector. We are proud to be so associated with that institution.
