Women told beware when working at night

Women who work late at offices in the night must take more safety precautions to ensure that they do not become the target of criminals. This was the advice given by WPC Charmaine Bailey of the  Community Policing Secretariat, to staff of SWMCOL at the  company’s Environmental, Health and Safety week, which was  observed at the company’s head office on Thursday last. WPC Bailey, who holds a BSc in Social Work, told her audience that “more and more women are in mid to senior management  and in a highly competitive environment, seek to prove themselves  and often work as late as their male counterparts but can become  vulnerable to planned criminal activity.”

She also cautioned that, “during  late hours in the office, security personnel should be advised that  they may be alone in the building or section of the building so that   attention will be paid to the area.” Staff were also advided that on leaving work places at night they should  survey the area before leaving the building, using their knowledge of the surrounding areas and if there is suspicion that they are being  followed, not  enter their driveways or stop at friends who may be  unable to assist, but drive to a crowded area and stop as criminals  would prefer to avoid unwanted attention or witnesses.
