CHRISTMAS MARKET FOR WOODFORD SQUARE

A VILLAGE is to be set up at Woodford Square in Port-of-Spain for street vendors to carry out their trade in time for Christmas. In making the announcement at yesterday’s statutory meeting of the Port-of-Spain Corporation, Mayor Murchison Brown stressed “once and for all,” that on no account will street vending be tolerated. Those who defy his order will be doing so at their own peril, and will face the full arm of the law, stressed the Mayor. He said his City Police Service will be receiving assistance from the central Police, through the Ministry of National Security. “There must be free movement off vehicular and pedestrian traffic.” The Mayor dismissed a suggestion by some downtown vendors that it was more sanitary to peddle their goods on the street. As for fish vending, Brown made it clear that in time to come, it would be back to the Central Market. He advised consumers to co-operate by not purchasing fish on the streets, because it is just not sanitary.
