Marli Alley
THE EDITOR: Permit me a space in your newspaper to comment on Marli Street, Port-of-Spain. Since the September 11 attack on the twin towers in New York, Marli Street has become another target whereby terrorists can wipe out the US Embassy and its dedicated staff with a bomb or suicide bomber. The wise town planners seem not to have considered relocating the embassy on an acre or two of land (money no object) where guards and police can have an unobstructive view of would-be terrorists, or construct an underground embassy to protect the many travelling Trinbagonians and more importantly the ambassador and his staff.
The plethora of ideas have resulted in closing the street from 6 am to 6 pm and more recently, Jersey barriers that have reduced to street to an alley, to the inconvenience of parishioners, many of whom have indicated that they will no longer worship at All Saints; the embarrassment, discomfort, waste of time, subtle insult, disregard for the elderly and a spit in the face of Trinbagonians as Marli Street has now become Marli Alley. Simply install rails on the northern pavement in the region of the embassy, until a suitable site is acquired, and thus restore the “alley” to a semblance of a street, that it once was, affording free movement to all.
