Mom killed on way to market
A 54-YEAR-OLD woman, on her way to purchase market goods with her husband, died after a vehicle collided with their pick-up van yesterday morning.
Seeta Sahadeo, a mother of two and grandmother of four from Old Southern Main Road, Mc Bean, Couva, reportedly died on the spot, while her husband escaped with minor bruises. The driver of the other vehicle was up to yesterday assisting police in their investigations.
According to police reports, around 2.15 am, the woman and her husband, Ganesh Sahadeo, 54, were proceeding north along the Uriah Butler Highway, when on reaching in the vicinity of Rip Speed, a van heading in the same direction slammed into the back of the couple’s pick-up. The pick-up reportedly spun out of control and overturned before landing on the median of the highway. Motorists who saw the accident assisted in pulling out Sahadeo and his wife, who was already dead. Eyewitnesses told police the driver of the other van overtook several vehicles before slamming into the victims’ van. The couple had been married for the past 29 years and had two children — Shoba, 27, and Prematee Sookraj, 28.
When Newsday visited the deceased’s home yesterday, a shaken Ganesh Sahadeo was surrounded by friends and relatives who tried to comfort him. The grieving man said his wife usually accompanied him to Port-of-Spain to purchase wholesale goods from the city market, which in turn, they sold retail in their village. “That was our only hope of living. The van totally mash up now and I don’t know what to do. That was the only way we could have made a living,” the crying man said. Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised pending the outcome of an autopsy. Chaguanas Police are investigating the accident.
