One killed, four shot in Laventille
A 20-year-old man became the country’s 190th murder victim for the year when he was shot several times, and his body dumped at the back of the Casualty Department of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital on Friday night. His murder was the 16th for the month of October. Reports revealed that around 6 pm, four men in a car dumped the bullet-riddled body of Darrel Jardine, of Dan Kelly Street, Laventille. Jardine was a member of the Jamaat al Muslimeen. The body was found by a security guard who alerted doctors and nurses. Officers of the Besson Street Police Station were contacted and a man claiming to be the brother of the dead man was interviewed. He identified the body of his brother but said that he could not give any useful information to the police.
Investigators told Sunday Newsday that the shooting death was gang related and linked to Thursday’s shooting in which a 17-year-old member of the Jamaat al Muslimeen was also shot. Around 5.45 pm on Friday, Anthony Registe, 45, of Desperlie Crescent, Yohan Wallace, 16, of Laventille Road who is a form four students of Excel Composite, Ronald Sammy, 23 of East Dry River and another man known only as “Stoneface” were liming at Laventille when a group of men fired several shots in their direction. The four received gunshot injuries and were rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they were treated and warded. The man only identified as “Stoneface” discharged himself from the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and was not interviewed by the police. Police believe that Jardine was shot at point blank range by the same gunmen who shot the four. A party of officers from the Besson Street Police Station led by Supt Errol Denoon and Ag Inspector Singh, Ag Sgt Stephen Grant and PC Brown carried out inquiries. Investigations are continuing.
