Teenagers escape from YTC

TWO teenagers serving prison sentences at the Youth Training Centre, Golden Grove, scaled a fence at the southern end of the prison on Saturday and escaped.

One of the two escapees was arrested at Macoya while the second prisoner is still at large up until yesterday. Reports revealed that between 8 am and 10 am on Saturday, Darryl Ghouralal 17, of South Oropouche, and Shurland Simonette, 17, of La Brea, scaled the fence at the prison and escaped. When they were discovered missing, a manhunt was launched by prison and police officers. Ghouralal was discovered hiding in Macoya around 11 am and he was returned to the YTC. He is expected to be charged with escaping legal custody. Ghouralal is serving a three-year term for robbery and was sentenced to YTC on November 15, 2001. He is due to be released from prison next December.

The other escapee, who is serving a five-year term for manslaughter was sentenced on February 2, 2001, and is due to be released in 2005.
Simonette is considered to be armed and dangerous and prison officials said yesterday that anyone with information on where the prisoner is hiding should contact the nearest police station. A report on the escape of the two is expected to be presented to Acting Prisons Commissioner Carlos McHoney today. The search for the prisoner continued yesterday and his relatives were informed of his escape.
