Father and son jailed for wounding
A STE Madeleine man and his son were yesterday sentenced to one-year imprisonment after they pleaded guilty before a San Fernando magistrate to wounding (chopping) a man.
Kumar Ramcharan, 45, and his son Tony, 23, both of Corinth Settlement, Ste Madeleine, were sentenced by First Court Magistrate Armina Deonarinesingh on the charge of wounding 27-year-old Franklyn Koonan. The matter was prosecuted by Ag Insp Clarence Boodram. The court heard that on Friday, October 17, father and son had an argument with Koonan who lives on the same street with the defendants. Later that day, the two armed themselves with cutlasses and confronted Koonan. Kumar dealt Koonan several chops about his body, while Tony restrained Koonan.
After the incident, the court heard, Koonan was taken to San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated and received 15 stitches to a chop wound above the right eye. Cpl Phillip of Ste Madeleine Police Station investigated the matter and arrested and charged the father and son. When Kumar appeared in court last week, he begged the magistrate to impose a fine or be allowed to compensate Koonan for his injuries. However, the magistrate ignored Kumar’s pleas and ordered him to reappear in court to face sentencing. In committing the act, the younger Ramcharan violated a two-year bond to keep the peace, which he had been placed on last year.
