Doctor charged with rape

A MEDICAL doctor has been charged with raping one of his patients and a warrant was yesterday obtained for his arrest, since he is currently out of the country.

The incident is alleged to have occurred on April 8 at the doctor’s private office in San Fernando. San Fernando CID detectives are investigating the allegation by the patient, a 24-year-old woman of Couva, that the doctor sexually assaulted her. Statements were obtained from the victim and the doctor, following which the file was sent to Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson, for instructions.

Three weeks ago, the file was sent to the South office of the Department of Public Prosecutions for the matter to be handled by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard. Two weeks ago, Gaspard issued instructions to the police for the charge of rape to be laid against the doctor. The charge was laid by WPC McDowell of the San Fernando CID. Contacted yesterday, Gaspard confirmed to Newsday of having issued instructions two weeks ago to the police for the rape charge to be laid against the doctor. The charge, which was laid yesterday, alleged that the doctor had sexual intercourse with the woman, without her consent, at his office on April 8, while he was medically examining her.
