Man hangs son, commits suicide
A BELMONT man hanged his two-year-old son and himself on Saturday night. Reports are that he was depressed over the break-up of a relationship with the child’s mother. Residents of Lucien Road Belmont were horrified when around 9:30 pm on Saturday night, the bodies of Joseph George, 47, owner of Jades Bread and Pastry shop of Observatory Street, and his son Judan George, 2, were discovered hanging in the kitchen of their home. Judan’s mother, Diana Paul, who had been lured by George to come to the house to collect Judan, made the discovery. According to police investigations, George became depressed when Paul refused his marriage proposal and moved out of the house and went to live at the home of a relative in Laventille.
On Saturday night, when Paul arrived at Lucien Road off the Belmont Valley Road, she called out to George and her son but got no answer. When she looked through a window she saw their bodies swinging from rafters in the kitchen. She screamed out and a neighbour broke down the front door and cut down the bodies. The Belmont police arrived shortly after. Relatives at the scene yesterday were shocked, “My brother was very cool and quiet,” his sister Magdalene George, told Newsday “In his normal mind he would never do something like this.” She said he had ended the relationship with Paul and was moving on with his life. Paul was also on the scene yesterday, but remained in a closed car and refused to speak to the media. Her father Alfred Sosa put a new lock on the door and was confronted by relatives of George demanding to know what was happening. He denied any knowledge of what could have led to murder and suicide. He did say however, that his daughter had spoken to him several times about fights with George and he had advised her but he never suspected that it would end in such tragedy, evidence of which could be seen in pieces of rope and a sandbag on the floor of the kitchen. Joseph had two other teenage children, a boy and a girl by a previous marriage. Sgt Ramsoobag of the Belmont CID is leading the investigation.
