ASJA Girls continue winning ways

ASJA Girls College (San Fernando) Under-16 and Under-20 teams continue their winning ways in the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Volleyball League South Zone competitions. And it was their Under-14 players Tiffany Singh and Vishala Cheeranjie who starred in their double victories at the South-West Regional Indoor Sports Arena.

Singh was the dominant force as AGC Under-16 whipped Holy Name Convent, Point Fortin in two straight sets. The first set ended in a thrilling 29-27 but the San Fernando-based team pulled away to triumph by a 25-18 margin. This was their second consecutive victory after getting the better of San Fernando Junior Comprehensive 25-15 and 25-18. The AGC Under-20 team found the Point Fortin Secondary school team a much more competitive unit and had to pull out all stops to conquer the home team. Led by Cheerangie’s outstanding all-round performance, ASJA recovered despite losing the first set at 20-25. They bounced back and overpowered “The Black City Girls” 25-20, 15-10. This was the first victory for the AGC Under-20 team after they succumbed to Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive 21-25 and 19-25 in their opening encounter. It was a welcome return for the Pleasantville girls after an absence of six years.

Unlike their Boys Under-16 team, Debe High School’s Girls Under-14 team tasted defeat in their first match. They were overwhelmed by Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive girls who triumphed in two straight sets at 25-11 and 25-23. It was the first time that Debe High have entered competitive schools volleyball and their Boys Under-16 squad recorded an historic first win against defending zonal and national champion Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive “B” team. DHS is only in existence for three years and it was successful national coach Macsood Ali who introduced them to the game. They seemed to have done most of the right things during that period and with more exposure they will become a force to reckon with. Today, they will be tested when they host zone runner-up Naparima Boys College in an Under-16 clash while their girls team will be up against Iere High School. Point Fortin Secondary will be at home at the SWRISA. Their Under-20 and Under-16 teams will do battle with Naparima Girls High while Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive will host ASJA Girls Under-16. San Fernando Junior Comprehensive will be at home to Holy Name Convent, Point Fortin.
