Naps keep South Intercol title
NAPARIMA missed a cluster of goalscoring chances but still kept the RBTT South Intercol title behind a 2-0 triumph over arch-rivals St Benedict’s at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella yesterday.
Kern Robertson lashed home a double, to wipe away the previous poor finishing of fellow teammates Brenton De Leon and Kezi Lara. Midway into the match, however, Naps were robbed of a goal by good defensive work when a clever shot by Lara was cleared off the line with goalkeeper Tenia beaten. But after several missed chances, Robertson allowed Naps fans to breathe a sigh of relief when he scored a brilliant goal in the 52nd minute. With his back to goal, Robertson chested down a high ball and in one motion shot on the turn giving Tenia no chance to save.
The Southern holders continued to waste several good scoring opportunites with De Leon the main culprit. Then Robertson made certain the trophy will stay with Naps when he latched on to a clever through pass by Ancil Farrier, before slipping the ball easily past the advancing goalkeeper. Today will be the turn of the East Zone, when league champions Arima, the Dial Dynamos, take on the mean Green Machine of St Augustine at the Larry Gomes Stadium in the zonal final from 3.45 pm.
