Ramsammy lands Woodbine double

TORONTO: Trinidad and Tobago’s Emile Ramsammy scored an impressive double winner on Sunday as the race for the Woodbine jockeys’ championship heats up.

Ramsammy landed the second and third races to maintain third place behind Canadian leader Todd Kabel and second-placed Barbadian Patrick Husbands on the jockeys’ table with three weeks left on the Woodbine horseracing season. In the second race, Ramsammy steadied 7-1 chance Arrogance at the start, raced off the rail, made a quick move three wide to gain command on the second turn and drew off in the stretch for a six-lengths win with a time of one minute, 47.01 seconds. Next race, Ramsammy stalked the pacesetters three wide with 4-1 chance If You’re Lucky. He advanced on the second turn to gain command and drew away in the stretch for a 2-lengths in a time of 1 min, 48.10 seconds.

The two victories took Ramsammy’s tally of winners for the season to 107 from 706 mounts. Kabel leads with 147 wins, four more than Husbands, who is 36 clear of Ramsammy. Barbadian Jono Jones, who scored in the sixth race on Sunday aboard 9-4 chance Chris’ Bad Boy, has 80 wins from his 574 mounts to be sixth in the jockeys’ standings.
