Akiel’s inquest adjourned

THE unavailability of lawyers has caused the inquest into the death of 11-year-old schoolboy Akiel Chambers to be adjourned.

When the matter was called yesterday in the Port-of-Spain Eighth Magistrates’ Court, Coroner Sherman Mc Nicolls was informed that the three lawyers who are looking after the interest of the Chambers’ family were involved in other matters. Desmond Allum SC was appearing in the High Court while Dr Kenneth O’Brien and Donna Prowell had other engagements. As a result, the inquest was adjourned to November 18. Mc Nicolls is conducting the inquest to determine the circumstances under which Akiel died. Akiel’s body was fished out of the swimming pool of businessman Charles James at Balata Terrace, Haleland Park, Maraval, on the morning of May 24, 1998. He had gone to a party at the James’ residence the afternoon before and disappeared. Sgt Kenneth Cordner is the prosecutor.
