Man in court today for baby’s murder
A 44-YEAR-OLD handyman is expected to appear before a Princes Town magistrate today charged with chopping to death a 16-month-old baby boy and attempting to murder the baby’s mother. The man, who was arrested shortly after the brutal crimes were committed, was charged late Friday evening after instructions were given by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Geoffrey Henderson. Henderson gave the instructions after reviewing the case file and autopsy report. According to reports, around 10.30 pm last Tuesday, the suspect barged into a bedroom of his Crystal View, Princes Town home and chopped the baby Kyle Basdeo on his head while he was asleep on his mother’s chest. The baby died instantly, while the enraged man rained chops on the infant’s mother Toy Basdeo, 35.
The woman remains warded in serious condition at the Orthopedic Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital. Following the chopping, the suspect dropped the bloody cutlass in the house and hid in some nearby bushes. Investigators said the relative was enraged with Basdeo because he believed that she had an affair. Relatives of the woman were asked by doctors to tell her that baby Kyle was alive and doing fine, since they (the doctors) feared that the truth would cause Basdeo to go into shock and even die. Baby Kyle was buried last Wednesday. Detective Sgt Maynard laid the charges against the suspect.
