Advice to San Fernando councillors
THE EDITOR: It is very simple to solve the street vendors problem in San Fernando. Instead of Government spending money on things which do not bring in any income, they should think seriously of putting down a double decker car park on the existing public car park.
If this is done then the vendors can use the place on certain days including Saturdays and Sundays. The area is indeed suitable since it is near a public washroom. For using the place, the city councillors can charge the vendors a small rent, this will help pay people for cleaning the place.
The city councillors must do some homework; look around the place and see what’s needed to be done. Imagine just at the top of High Street, where the councillors pass at some time, there stands one of the first imported mail letter boxes which is of metal and shaped like a small barrel. The original door is missing and the item itself is weather beaten. This item should be preserved, it was never repaired or painted for the past five or more years, it is just standing there. There is a similar metal mail box in St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain, which is preserved, painted and is in use, so councillors it is is no headache to do the needful to bring it to the original shape and colour. The one in Port-of-Spain is being used and it is well preserved.
Not far from this item on the left side there it is a square piece of the road which it is sinking daily and, sooner or later, some person will damage their legs in it. A lot of heavy vehicles pass on it, and people with high heel shoes will surely get their legs damaged. Since we are having no vehicles on High Street in Christmas month, the people concerned should re-pitch the road filling up all cracks and doing some good repair to the drains. Give the people a Christmas present. You may also re-pitch Mucurapo Street — with the heavy rains the surface of the street does not look presentable. Do your homework.
