Teenage Marshall is Scalextric champ
KELLON MARSHALL and Sayyad Khan have won the right to represent Trinidad and Tobago at this year’s International Scalextric Tournament in Guyana.
Marshall, a 15-year-old St Stephen’s College form four student, edged out Khan for the Model Car Association Scalextric Under-19 gold medal and trophy at the final on Saturday last at Trincity Mall, Tacarigua. Marshall finished with a score of 77.0 to the runner-up 76.7, while Jenelle Joseph collected the bronze medal with 74.3 points. Newcomer Saressa Baptiste was fourth on 59.0. In the final, Marshall and Khan went head-to-head for a full 19 laps and the latter was unfortunate to lose after receiving a hefty bump by another car as they neared the final bend. Co-opoerative Citrus Growers Association’s Bunny Kurjah presented the trophies, medals and cases of Freshpick juices to the four finalists.
Customs broker Clive Griffith of Belmont took the adults final with 79.4 points ahead of Tobago lifeguard Trevor James who had a score of 76.8. Marilyn Peters got the bronze, narrowly beaten by the silver medallist, as she totalled 76.3 points. Allan Poon King was fourth with 72.8. Winners received their prizes from Hand Arnold (Trinidad) Limited special events co-ordinator Andrew Browne, who also gave competitors Teacher’s Scotch Whisky. Meanwhile, quarter, semi and finals in the Scalextric Formula One Championships in the women and over-35 categories take place at Gulf City Mall, La Romain, from 1 pm on Saturday. All women competitors must be 18 years and over. The women category will be sponsored by Jergens Skin Lotion, and Teacher’s sponsors the over-35s.
