Two charged with murder in Cascade

TWO MEN were yesterday jointly charged with the murder of the director of Trinidad Ropeworks Ltd, but only one appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Four C Court, where the charges were read. Colin Edgehill stood alone before Magistrate Quinlan, charged with the October 27 murder of 60-year-old Russel Govia of 32 Cascade Road, Cascade. The second man, Marcus Marshall, of Dorata Street, St Joseph Old Road, Laventille, was absent because he was not brought from the prison where he is serving a nine-month sentence for possession of arms and ammunition.

Govia, a father of three, was shot at around 8.30 pm outside his home when he came out of his car to open the gate. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. The men were charged by Sgt Isaac of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Port-of-Spain.  Edgehill, who was not represented by an attorney, told Quinlan that he had an old bullet wound on his hand and that he had trained in the army but had never passed out. The matter was transferred to the Eighth Court and adjourned to December 1.
