Cops solve murder of Cunupia fish exporter
Homicide officers probing the execution of Cunupia fish exporter Ramkhelawan Charan have made a breakthrough in the investigation with the arrest of three persons. A 20-year-old man, who was one of the three suspects detained, gave a statement to officers on Wednesday. Police officers will consult with Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson on how to proceed with the matter. The two other suspects were placed on identification parades Wednesday for two other murders and robberies.
On the morning of August 21, two bandits armed with guns stormed into the Mon Plasir Road Cunupia home of Charan, ordered his maid at gunpoint to lead them to the living room where Charan was checking a quantity of cash. The gunmen stormed into the room, robbed Charan of the cash and then shot him twice in the chest. Charan, 59, was the 145th murder victim for the 2003. Officers of the Homicide Unit carried out extensive investigations and arrested a 20-year-old Barataria man and two others from Caroni and Bamboo Settlement. Based on the statement obtained from the Barataria man, police investigators believe that they are now in a position to solve the murder of Charan. They feel that they may also solve two other outstanding murders and a series of robberies with the arrest of the three suspects.
