Potts lures out female title holder
INTERNATIONAL boxing match-maker Buxo Potts claims to have lured reigning Caribbean champion Tiana Sosa out of hibernation.
And he is hoping that his boxer Crystal Lessey will teach the Tiger Boxing Gym starlet a lesson tonight on a card organised by the Amateur Association in San Fernando. Potts, a former promising horse racing jockey said on Thursday he was forced to go public last week to get the attractive Sosa to commit to matching gloves with Lessey. “At the San Fernando Sports Festival organised by Anthony ‘Bike Doctor’ Commissiong I took the mike and called on Sosa to come out and fight and not hide,” said Potts. And goaded by the crowd, Sosa faced the music and accepted to take on Lessey who is preparing to fight on the undercard of a world title promotion in Bermuda at the end of the month. The confrontation between Potts and Sosa culminated in several weeks of acrimony after the welterweight title-holder criticised the match-maker on a i95.5 FM Radio programme hosted by Andre Baptiste.
Callers to the programme also chastised Potts for advice he allegedly gave Sosa concerning her status as an amateur boxer who has fought professionally but wants to revert. “I had put down that attack on me as ignorance of the law governing a professional who wants to go back to being an amateur which we know is restricted to two fights. However my point was that Sosa, since winning the Caribbean crown earlier this year, has been running from my fighter Giselle Martin. Now we have her cornered,” said Potts. “She appears to have balooned in weight and is now ten pounds heavier that her best fighting weight of 140. And we are counting on the fact that the decisions that have gone her way have been very close,” said Potts. He advised Sosa to assume the mantle of a true champion and show heart and courage in the ring and not try and throw distractions in the way of those wanting to move up in the sport. Potts said although Lessey is not trained by him, he will be ringside advising her how to tackle Sosa since he has an active interest in seeing the Port-of-Spain fist-fighter hit the canvas.
