save Moruga’s sporting facilities

THE EDITOR: It is with disgust that residents of Moruga look around at the neglect of the recreational facilities in the area. There are at least five major recreation grounds serving the area inclusive of Marac and Penal Rock Road, and all are in a state of neglect.

Prior to the elections of 2002 some work was started at the Basse Terre recreation ground but has not been completed to date. Time and again people in the know including our Minister of Sport have lauded the positive aspects of sport on the psyche and lifestyle of a community as it is a deterrent to deviant behaviour, yet our sporting facilities remain stone age. There is need for improvements in the existing facilities to cater for wider interests as well as the need for increase in the number of such facilities.

The communities of Edward Trace La Saavanne, La Rufin and Rock River/Cachipe do not even have as basic a requirement as a recreation ground. Those conditions have led to a drastic reduction in the number of sporting activities being held in Moruga and several sporting bodies have died as a result. We are therefore as a concerned group in Moruga, calling on the Minister of Sports and our Member of Parliament to seek ways to deal positively with this issue and the Moruga Employment Group can even suggest one or two novel approaches that will benefit the community at large.
