Diego Martin Regional Corporation to feed all its residents
The Diego Martin Regional Corporation has given the assurance that despite a lack of resources, it is doing all in its power to improve the lives of all residents of Diego Martin, including the provision of meals for each resident of the area. The announcement was made at the Corporation’s Community Awards Function on Saturday night at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Building. A total of 19 awards were granted in the fields of business, education, sports, community service, culture and political service. Among the recipients were Guardian Life, St Anthony’s College, Merry Tones Steel Orchestra and former UNC attorney Garvin Nicholas. “Local Government! This is a hell of a thing I have gotten myself into. I never knew people could complain so much or write so much, and it is no easy task to deal with the complexities of Local Government and its relationship with Central Government,” said Diego Martin Regional Corporation Chairman, Steve Castagne.
Castagne went on to point out that the Corporation is operating on a “minimal budget” and the acquisition of adequate funds for the purchase of the necessary infrastructure to serve the 120,000 residents may take as long as 18 months. The Chairman then declared, “We will find out all who are unemployed. By March of next year we wish to provide a meal for each person in Diego Martin, because we have persons who don’t even have food to give to their children; and we will prepare for the dry season in the rainy season and the rainy season in the dry. There will be changes, changes that will make our predecessors proud.” In attendance was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Terrance Jurawan, who expressed fear over the “general lack of concern” which many regional corporations display towards their respective communities.
“Only 40 percent of the population participated in the last Local Government election. This means that the part of Government that should be closest to the people is not, they are by far closer to Central Government,” lamented Jurawan. According to Jurawan, a vibrant local government is important to the development of third world countries. The Permanent Secretary suggested that Corporations develop “directories” consisting of skill inventories in order to efficiently utilise all their human resources.
