TTEC downplays Tobago power failure

Corporate communications manager at the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission, Dennis Mc Comie, yesterday said there was no reason for persons in Tobago to panic as the regular power flow to the island via the North Oropouche sub-station was only down for four minutes.

Speaking to Newsday, Mc Comie revealed that around 11.51 am, a trip in the North Oropouche sub-station was responsible for the minor power outage, and that only parts of Tobago had been affected, not the entire island. Power is said to have to been restored to the island by 11.56 am. Questioned about the power failure which occurred on Sunday afternoon affecting South Trinidad, Mc Comie revealed that  PowerGen had experienced a fault in its generating capacity, but that by 7 pm, “everything was back up.”

Commending TTEC’s technicians for their “remarkable” achievement in rectifying the problem, Mc Comie said the problem, which occurred last week and left parts of the East-West Corridor without electricity for some time, was still being sorted out, as “it was somewhat tricky.” He explained that due to the inclement weather a few days prior this incident, lightning had struck some power lines. However some of these lines which needed to be repaired were underground. Mc Comie concluded that customers in the affected areas would be awarded a rebate from TTEC.
