Caribbean, Latin boxing on upgrade

WITH the recent appointment of Dr Calvin Inalsingh as president of the WBA FEDECARIBE, Caribbean and Latin boxing have taken a giant leap forward.

Just two months after his appointment by the World Boxing Association at the WBA Convention in Bali this year, four championship fights have been sanctioned. There will be two fights in Panama, one in Mexico and the heavyweight title fight between Sherman ‘Tank’ Williams and Garry Winman which will be held in Nassau, Bahamas, on December 6. “Tank,” a personal body guard of  famed hip hop artiste Lil’ Kim, was on the under card of the Roy Jones/John Ruiz fight which was supervised by Dr Inalsingh.

The Fedecaribe, as a regional body of the WBA, is an important link in moving boxing forward in the Caribbean. The Fedcaribe champions will be rated in the WBA Fedelatin and on winning that title will have the opportunity to fight for the WBA title. The Fedcaribe is the first stepping stone for Caribbean boxers to enter the world ratings and then vie for a world championship.

The WBA FEDECARIBE will be trying to unite Caribbean Boxing once again. Dr Inalsingh was the president of the Caribbean Boxing Association which did not get off the ground because of lack of cooperation from the founding countries. Dr Inalsingh will be the supervisor of the fight in the Bahamas and Tommy Thomas will be referee. Tommy Thomas is an International World Boxing Association official and has officiated in 20 international fights.
