Businessman shot in $16,000 robbery

A 63-YEAR-OLD businessman was shot after attempting to fight off masked gunmen who robbed him and his wife of over $16,000 worth in cash and jewelry on Thursday night.

Clive Brand, owner of a San Fernando pub, was shot in his right arm and remains warded in satisfactory condition at San Fernando General Hospital. According to police reports, around 7.45 pm, Brand and his wife Annette Brand, 45, pulled up in front their Tarouba Road, Marabella, home. As Brand alighted from his vehicle to open the gate, two masked, armed bandits ran up to the car and pointed their guns at his wife’s head, announcing a hold-up.

The men proceeded to rob the woman of $7,800 worth of jewelry, comprising three gold rings, gold earrings, a gold watch and gold bracelets. She was also robbed of her purse which contained $1,100, a Driver’s Permit and National ID card. While one of the bandits kept his gun against the woman’s head, the other relieved Brand of $6,000 cash and $1,500 in jewelry. At this point, the elderly man tried to stop the bandit and a struggle ensued and Brand was shot in his right arm.  The gunmen then escaped on foot, while an alarm was raised and the police notified. A bleeding Brand was taken to the hospital for treatment.
