Pleasant surprise in Port-of-Spain

THE EDITOR: I am writing for the first time in a very long time to the newspaper because I feel that I should share my positive feelings with all those who feel negative about our country. After reading and hearing so much about the efforts being made in downtown Port-of-Spain, I visited the downtown area for the first time in many years this past Saturday. To my great surprise, downtown Port-of-Spain is starting to look like a city again. There were people walking on the sidewalks which are no longer obstructed by boxes and tables. A heavy flow of vehicular traffic was proceeding smoothly on the streets. Mothers and daughters (like myself and my daughter), could stop and window-shop without any hindrance. The feeling of Christmas was alive with all the hustling and bustling.

We also felt safer because of the presence of several young uniformed officers who looked extremely alert and vigilant. All of this in a country where the daily headlines speak of violence and tragedy. For anyone in doubt that we may save this country, please visit our capital city quickly. It’s starting to feel like a real city. I would like to congratulate the government, the Mayor, the Police and the Downtown Owners and Manufacturers Association for the improvements which are so obvious.
