Now Grande moves to stop vending
STREET vending in Sangre Grande has been outlawed. The chairman of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, Ronald Boy-nes, sent out the message yesterday. “No vending will be allowed on the pavements and streets of the Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande, within a one mile radius of the Sangre Grande Market.”
Boynes said his Corporation’s approach to the vending situation is a constructive one. “The law must be upheld, but at the same time, we want to ensure that our honest, hardworking citizens are able to make a living,” he explained. To this end, certain measures have been implemented to accommodate vending. A Christmas shopping village is being set up. Registration forms can be obtained at the Corporation’s office, Ramdass Street, Sangre Grande. Both the existing market at Cunapo Southern Road and the outdoor market areas around are being refurbished.
Also being refurbished is the site at the corner of Eastern Main Road and Cunapo Southern Road, to accommodate the existing vendors and 20 new ones. The chairman said: “When the town is organised and the law is obeyed, everyone benefits. It means cleaner, safer streets and more business for the community.” Meanwhile, the Corporation has decided to organise and beautify Sangre Grande and its environs. The Corporation is soliciting the assistance of the business community to become involved in the enhancement of the town by painting and beautifying the facades of their building. The Corporation is also asking businessmen to ensure that no illegal vending takes place on the pavements in front of their premises and to report any incidents of this nature to police.
