Williams completes karate technical workshops
Sensei Darryl Williams, 5th Dan recently conducted a series of technical workshops for Trinidad and Tobago karatekas.
This was at the Goshindo Karate Dojo in St James from Thursday November 20 to 22 November and his trip was arranged by the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Alliance (TTKA). This according to a release from Keshni Sookram General Secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Alliance based in Tunapuna. Over seventy participants were introduced to Paiku (white Bear) kata from the very old style of ReiRyu Karate-Do. On the Saturday those interested in kumite were taught strategy on closing the distance and body shifting with the objective of scoring.
All fees collected went to the TTKA children’s programme towards the purchase of protective equipment for the “dojos.” The TTKA has two branches in D’Abadie and Arima. For further information call 642-5925 or 643-9023. The dojos that participated were encouraged by Sensei Anthony Sydney and Sensei Williams to join the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Union (TTKU). Sensei Sydney, who is TT’s highest ranking official (WKF rules) had agreed to conduct workshops every two weeks for those who wish to pursue officiating.
This will prepare them for the TTKU referees’ test. For information call 622-0188. TTKA have re-submitted their application to the TTKU. Finally Sensei Curtis Carrera 3rd Dan was appointed chief instructor of the TTKA. Sensei Carrera has been in karate for over 25 years and has been a student of Sensei Williams for more than 15.
