25 cheques disappear from Welfare Office
TUNAPUNA police are investigating the disappearance of 25 cheques from the Tunapuna Welfare Office.
While information was sketchy up to press time, sources at the Government department confirmed that the cheques were discovered missing early yesterday morning. They could not say, however, if the cheques were signed or unsigned. Sources told Newsday that if the cheques are signed, they can easily be cashed. Unsigned cheques would be more difficult to cash but the bearer would be able to indicate what sum they want on the cheques. The bank was called to immediately stop the cashing of any cheques bearing the stolen serial numbers. Sources also confirmed that, up to press time, the Welfare Office was handling the investigation internally. Police said they will conduct their own investigations.
