David Williams new national cricket coach
Former Test wicket keeper David Williams has been appointed coach of the Trinidad and Tobago senior cricket team for the 2004 Carib Cup regional cricket series.
This was announced by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), Alloy Lequay yesterday. Williams will replace Anthony Gray who coached the team for the Red Stripe Bowl series in October. Another national player Phil Simmons served as coach of the team for the 2003 Carib Cup series. Williams was the preferred choice of the Board after talks between Gray and the Board fell through earlier this week. It is reported that Gray wanted a package that included $17,000 per month and the Board was willing to pay only $4,000. Gray decided to give up the post and Williams who was doing a West Indies wicket keeping course in Antigua was called in to take over.
The pint-sized Williams told Newsday yesterday: “I am very happy with the fact that I am now the coach of the Trinidad and Tobago senior cricket team. “I am going to meet with the players today at the National Cricket Centre and will observe them to see what we have in stock for the 2004 Carib Cup. “I will then work on their flaws with the hope of correcting their problems before the series gets underway.” Manager of the team, Omar Khan said the national squad has to be named by December 15 and he was hoping for better weather so that the trial matches can get underway.
