St Anthony’s win Under-17 rugby title

ST ANTHONY’S College have carried their football success into rugby recently winning the Under-17 Division title and Bill Bason Trophy.

The Westmoorings Tigers crushed Fatima 5-0 in their final at St Mary’s College ground on Sunday, during the 2003 Carib Beer International Rugby Sevens Tournament. But the major title went to Northern Virginia (USA) who played through the tournament unbeaten, whipping Atlantis 31-0. Atlantis, also from the United States proved no match for the new champions who replace Border Reivers. The new champions served a warning in the preliminaries when they easily outplayed Border Reivers 21-7. They whipped Rogue Wolves 38-0 and blitzed Trinidad Northern 56-0.

Atlantis were also unbeaten until meeting their fellow Americans, beating locals Caribs 28-7 and Guyana 19-5, but only managed a 12-7 victory over the local Police team. The men plate went to Good Luck (Martinique) who stopped the other Frenchmen in the tournament Bruc (Guadeloupe) 24-5. Atlantis still returned to the United States with the massive LIAT/Charlie Bailey Trophy, with their women dismantling a Trinidad and Tobago President’s team 39-0 in their finale. English women Aesculapians whipped another TT Select team 22-5 to take the women plate. Stephanie Bruce (Atlantis) was awarded the Jamie Waters Trophy as the tournament’s Most Promising Player, while the Patrick Gittens Memorial Trophy went to Trinidadian Brian Stollmeyer. Guyana got the Larry Mouttet Camaraderie Award.
