Boynes calls for teamwork

SPORTS MINISTER Roger Boynes called on all officials and employees of his Ministry to appreciate the great value of teamwork and performance management as two key components for success of the overall national sports policies and activities organised for the benefit of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. He made the call at the Ministry’s “Strategic Visioning Retreat” held at the Hilton Trinidad on Monday last. Persons employed at all levels and all facilities  coming directly under the management and supervision of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs were involved in the retreat, geared to successfully implement the government’s new sports policies and development thrust, and to fully utilise all the resources and expertise available to lift the standard of performances of all sports participants.

Boynes said: “Teamwork and performance management are the conduits to successfully implement our new strategies and policies. “If we respond positively to this call and communicate effectively among ourselves, we will activate the mechanisms to produce outstanding results. It is indeed an honour to share in  this momentous activity with you as we examine and define the path which we will follow on our journey into the future. “This exercise beckons us all to look at the important role the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs plays in achieving the goals of government.” He emphasised the need for “modification of new designs and delivery of organisational activities” within the Ministry. “And to create and enhance the knowledge skills and activities of individuals within the Ministry in order to better equip everyone to perform at higher levels. Training and development programmes and levels of activities have changed dramatically over the years, and can be expected to continue evolving rapidly through the millennium.”

The Minister stressed that his ministry has embarked on a course to enhance its organisational effectiveness by charting a new direction. In this regard, he said: “Our visioning exercise will also develop the shared vision of the future for the Ministry over the next five years as we review the way in which we respond to the sporting fraternity and the needs of the young people of this nation.” “As we develop a mission statement, mapping out the general direction this ministry will take in light of the needs of our society, it is expected that the entire ministry will benefit in many ways from positive participation by all present.” “Managing what we do best and appreciating our roles is directly linked to how effectively we discharge our responsibilities. Strategic planning is the process of deciding on the objectives of an organisation, on changes and variation of those objectives in terms of time and the use of available and relevant resources. It is the process of determining how we attain those objectives through policy, and the use and disposition of resources. All efforts are geared towards cohesion and the crucial elements involved in team building.” “Enhancing our core competencies will help in arriving at important objectives, which would chart the rapidly changing global, regional, local environment, analyzing, as we go along, how the external environment affects our Ministry.” The Minister made a stirring plea for everyone to become more involved and to truly understand the working principles and policies to be implemented by the Ministry.
