Bring back Giuliani as advisor

THE EDITOR: Minister Mahadeo’s remarks to the Rotary Club are typical of government’s attitude to crime in our country. Here it is, a few hours after one of the country’s noble, humble industrialists is murdered, her response is: “You gentlemen should be involved in mentoring.” It is laughable, if nothing else. Although not a Rotarian, I believe everyone and his nennen knows that the Rotary Club is an organisation of business people and professionals who commit their time, their money and their sweat, voluntarily to the community, primarily on behalf of the less fortunate, in a wide range of meaningful projects, designed to help people achieve practical results. They have been doing that for decades, so why insult their intelligence by proposing this flim-flam idea that probably flew in her brain minutes before she stood up to speak?

Why didn’t she tell them what she and her collective Cabinet intend to do to save the law-abiding from those who have declared war on us?
Why didn’t she give them comfort by explaining why the Cabinet has no use for Giuliani or his ideas? Why didn’t she reveal why the police service is not recruiting bright young people to help build and establish an IT network, an essential tool in the fight against crime? Why didn’t she explain why after all these years the Licensing Office is still not computerised and on-line? Why didn’t she confirm when Cabinet will have in place roadway cameras, breathalysers, one-way mirrors in every station, the promised hundreds of new policemen on the beat, the technology for DNA testing, the provision of simple amenities necessary for them to function from stations that are adequately equipped, comfortable and efficiently maintained?

Is this Government too proud to enlist the help of a competent person with a measurable track record to head the Ministry of National Security, too arrogant to listen to advice from anyone not bearing a party card? Stop telling us what we must do to stop the crime. As a matter of fact, we don’t have any more space for burglar proofing and we can’t preach to people how to raise their children if they not even around, okay!

My suggestion is bring Giuliani back officially, in the capacity of an advisor and start implementing his proposals post haste. The man is in demand in major cities internationally. His credentials are the statistics he is achieving. He can provide the answers, and what is more important it can be done quickly. The responsibility for our safety is the government’s, through an efficient police service. Please, no more old talk, no more excuses, no more casting blame. We tired, we vex and we fed up. If you are not responsible, then you are not in charge.
