Cops seize $2.5M in ‘ganja’
COMPRESSED marijuana with an estimated local street value of $2.5 million was seized by Pt Fortin police who also arrested and charged two men on Thursday night. According to police reports, around 7 pm officers were on enquiries in the Point Fortin district when they received information that a black Mitsubishi Galant car was heading into the district from Cedros with a large consignment of illegal narcotics. The officers, including Sgt Palloo, Cpl Monsegue, PC Sookraj, PC Rambachan and PC Gupta, intercepted the vehicle in front of the Pt Fortin Junior Secondary school on Reid Road, Point Fortin.
On checking the vehicle, they discovered 11 crocus bags containing a total of 113 packets of compressed marijuana with a combined weight of 647 pounds (323.5 kilos), and an estimated local street value of $2.5 million. Newsday understands the narcotics will be taken to the Forensic Science Centre, Federation Park, St James, for tests and then to the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) head offices for safe-keeping. Satnarine Boodooram, 36, of Ramzan Drive, El Socorro and Derrick Godfrey Cadoo, 35, of Persad Lane, El Socorro were arrested and charged by PC Sookraj for possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Boodooram and Cadoo appeared before First Court Point Fortin Magistrate Maria Busby Earle-Caddle yesterday, charged with possession of the marijuana. Both men were not called upon to plead since the charge was laid indictably. They were remanded into police custody and ordered to reappear on December 16.
