Odds favour criminals

THE EDITOR: On a daily basis, we are witnessing an increasing level of violent crime and senseless killings. The perpetrators, mainly young people, apparently have no far of the law. In the last few years, it has become practically impossible to carry out capital punishment, as dictated by law. Corporal punishment in schools has become taboo. In the absence of meaningful deterrent, it is not surprising what is happening today in our schools and in our society. The odds are firmly in favour of those who are criminally-minded. Unless firm steps are taken now, this situation is going to get worse and it is only a matter of time before the law-abiding start taking the “law” into their own hands.
