Just some political observations for the year
THE EDITOR: The Prime Minister cut an impressive figure in pictures of his recent trip overseas. He certainly looked suave in those photo sessions. However in each of the pictures, his beloved Balisier tie was missing. Here was an ideal opportunity to promote the popular flower as part of Eco Tourism, as well as the popularity of the party. I understand that because he was representing the country, he chose not to wear the tie. I wonder why he insists on doing so when he represents the Government in local functions? Oh well!
Mr Manning was on the button when he alleged that many kidnappings were bogus. This for two reasons. Firstly, nobody that is close to him has ever been kidnapped. Secondly, the kidnappers may well be bogus policemen. I also think that the murder rate is inflated. You see, most of those thought to be murdered, actually committed suicide. So the stats will show a considerably lower murder rate. The advertisements by the Committee Against Crime in the newspapers is commendable. Too bad the perpetrators of the crimes cannot read these ads. Maybe the victims should wave and read these ads to them. Maybe “Chicken Liken” was not such a bad start after all. Maybe.
The posting of Glenda Morean as High Commissioner to London was a stroke of genius. We always thought that she should go far... the further the better, likewise the choice of Pundit Manniedeo to India was a poor one. That portfolio should have gone to Dr Selwyn Cudjoe or Ricardo Welch. When we hate something, if we get to understand it we would like it. A similar post should be created in Zimbabwe — Sat Maharaj would be a shoe in. The removal of Colm Imbert was long overdue. The Prime Minister has promised to help our Caricom neighbours. Colm will be the ideal man to help Grenada with its Infrastructure (building walls and Stadia). Likewise Fitzgerald “Apprentice” Hinds will be an asset to the Jamaicans in the field of Social Development (and Agriculture).
Minister Beckles’ statement about the Government Mauby served to us by WASA is accurate. Growing up in the seventies under the PNM regime, similarly coloured water from rivers was all that we could get to drink in the rural areas. If only that water could be served at the head table in functions that she attends instead of crystal clear bottled water. This will bolster the confidence of the poor uneducated masses. Mr Rahael’s shift to the Ministry of Health is indeed interesting. Not that he is as incapable as his predecessor (nobody could be). His Arabic pronunciation of the Latinised words is indeed delightful. He is the type of man who could make “Paradigm” sound like a disease.
The recent report of Raffique Shah being robbed must be inaccurate. How could a man who in the past has boasted of beating ten armed men be manhandled? How could just two scrunters humiliate a spokesman for the poor downtrodden bandits? Impossible say I! I have stopped wishing anyone the usual kind sentiments at this, the season of good wishes. This after roughly two years ago when everything I wished anyone came out the opposite. I also observed that this phenomenon affected half the population of the country. So no “Good Tidings” from me this year.
