Grenadian tennis coach Charles passes away

ST GEORGE’S: Grenada’s first local tennis coach has died at the age of 86. Kyron Sylvester Charles, also known as “Redman,” passed away at his home on St Juilles Street, St George’s on Tuesday morning, the GrenadaSports web site has reported. Charles was the pioneering force behind local tennis in the 60s and 70s, coaching some of the top players during those years.

Former Co-ordinator of Sport, Cecil Greenidge was a close friend of coach Redman and recalled his contribution to the sport on the island. Greenidge was instrumental in getting the National Lottery Authority, through the Ministry of Sports, to provide a monthly financial contribution to Charles. “Redman is one of those who you’ll consider has made a sterling contribution to tennis. He has contributed to the development of tennis for more than 30 years. His life was dedicated to tennis development,” Greenidge said.
