Former ‘architectural gem’ gets help from local bank

Republic Bank’s Manager of Group Corporate Com-munications, Anna-Maria Garcia-Brooks recently presented $15,000 to Assistant Parish Priest, Father Roger Paponette of the Church of the Holy Rosary, Park Street, Port-of-Spain. The bank was responding to the generosity of the church in allowing the image of “Virgo Mater Dei,” the church’s stained glass window of the Virgin Mother and Christ, to be used in the bank’s corporate Christmas greeting cards.

The Church of the Holy Rosary was built in 1867 and is a treasured national landmark, consecrated by 8th Archbishop of Port-of-Spain, Anthony Pantin. Coined the “architectural gem of the Colony” in the Trinidad Gazette of 1910, the church building, which continues to provide solace to many, is now in dire need of repair.
