Anti-doping boss for Barbados
BRIDGETOWN: World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Dick Pound will attend the Barbados National Sports Council (NSC) awards at the end of January. Pound will give the feature address at the NSC Awards on January 31 at the Garfield Sobers Complex, which honours the country’s top performers in sport for 2003. Pound is expected to speak on drugs in sport. Barbadian Dr Adrian Lorde, chairman of the NSC Awards Committee and head of the National Anti-Doping Commission, said Pound’s address is timely, coming a few months ahead of the Athens Olympics. “We just think this would highlight the issues of anti-doping in Barbados at the beginning of an Olympic year, especially with the doping events of 2003,” Lorde said.
“It would further sensitise athletes, the general public and the media on issues relevant to anti-doping, as well as the relevant Government bodies which are involved,” Dr Lorde said. Lorde also revealed that the NSC had extended an invitation to Caricom ministers of sport or directors of sport to have a special session with Pound where they could discuss issues affecting their country. The highlight of the function will be the presentation of the Barbados Sports Personality Of The Year award.
