Brown, Scott set to cop track and field crowns
ACE NATIONAL sprinter Darrel Brown is tipped to walk away with the “Male Athlete of the Year” title when the National Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) stages its 2003 awards ceremony today.
The 19-year-old Brown is expected to receive his award during the event, scheduled for the Auditorium of Eastern Credit Union’s La Joya Complex from 4 pm. During the 2003 season Brown, who is based at Auburn University, Alabama, became the youngest medallist at the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) World Senior Championships in Paris, France when he finished second in the 100-metre final in a time of 10.08 seconds.
He also clocked a world junior record of 10.01 in the earlier rounds of the prestigious meet. And Candice Scott is favoured to claim the “Female Athlete of the Year.” The 23-year-old University of Florida student took gold in the shot-put during the National Senior Championships with a distance of 15.89 metres in addition to bronze in the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic with an effort of 69.06m, the first TT woman medallist in the event’s history.
Among the dignitaries expected to attend today’s programme are Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Roger Boynes and Education Minister Senator Hazel Manning.
