New Leewards bowlers to face TT
CHARLESTOWN: The Leeward Islands selectors have named uncapped bowlers Dane Weston and Virgil Browne in their 13-man squad to face Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match of the Carib Beer Series regional tournament this weekend. The 30-year-old Weston is a medium pacer and pugnacious lower order batsman for Antigua and Barbuda, and Nevisian Browne, 29, is a left-arm spinner with enough batting ability to prop up the late order.
Browne played for the Rest of the Leewards in last year’s Red Stripe Bowl. The squad, with the experienced Stuart Williams as captain and Hayden Walsh as coach, has a spread of four players each from Antigua and Barbuda and Nevis, two from Anguilla, including vice-captain Alex Adams and three from St. Kitts. Shane Jeffers, who was captain of the West Indies “B” team in last year’s Carib Beer Series, is also included in the squad that travels today for their Guaracara Park opener in Trinidad. Missing from the party is talented Antiguan pacer Carl Simon, who returned home early from the camp here with back strain and was not considered for selection. Deryck Parry, originally named as manager, has announced his unavailability and a replacement is expected to be named soon.
Leewards Squad — Stuart Williams (captain), Alex Adams (vice-captain), Wilden Cornwall, Sylvester Joseph, Shane Jeffers, Tonito Willett, Carl Tuckett, Jason Williams, Virgil Browne, Elsroy Powell, Kerry Jeremy, Chaka Hodge, Dane Weston.
