Bravo bowls TT to first innings lead
DWAYNE BRAVO underlined his growing reputation as an allrounder when he captured six Leeward Islands wickets for 70 runs, to bowl Trinidad and Tobago to first innings points on the third day of the opening Carib Beer cricket clash at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, South Trinidad, yesterday.
Scores: TRINIDAD and TOBAGO 335 and 122 for four wickets. LEEWARD ISLANDS 324. Resuming on 173 for two wickets, the Leewards must have harboured hopes of at least gaining a first innings lead, but Bravo bowling his medium pacers quickly wiped away those ambitions. Off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth started the Leewards slide, having Shane Jeffers caught and bowled for 74. And Bravo took over, removing the dangerous Tonito Willett for 93 to break the back of the Leewards resistance. Left arm spinner Devindra Krishna then got into the act, claiming the all-important wicket of skipper Stuart Williams (18) who has scored six centuries against Trinidad and Tobago in regional cricket.
Wilden Cornwall with a stubborn 57 then took the Leewards agonisingly close to the Trinidad and Tobago score but it was all Bravo on the day. Trinidad and Tobago took to the crease for a second time with a slim lead of 11 runs, and lost two quick wickets before skipper Imran Jan who hit an enterprising 58 with 11 fours and Jamaican import Ricardo Powell came together in a 79-run fourth-wicket stand. But Trinidad and Tobago are not yet out of the woods, holding an overall lead of 133 with six second innings wickets in hand. Jan opened with Bravo, but with the score on 14 the young allrounder was out, and with the addition of another 14 runs Aneil Kanhai (9) left. The fourth Trinidadian batsman out was Shazam Babwah (5), while Powell was unbeaten on 38. Tishan Maraj is the other not out batsman on one.
