Baynes, Clarke take TATIL golf titles
TRINIDAD and Tobago golfing king Carlos “Sexy” Baynes began the 2004 season in fine form with victory in the 11th annual TATIL Invitational Golf Tournament last weekend. The two-day tournament, played at the St Andrew’s Golf Course, Moka, Maraval, featured a maximum 128 golfers in six flights (divisions), including two Championship and a Women’s Open. Nevertheless, with defending champ Edward “Teddy” Grell absent from proceedings, Baynes ended the first day on two-over-par 74, three behind initial leader John Holley.
But Baynes stormed ahead for good on Sunday, carding a six-over-par 78 for an overall tally of 152, one ahead of top juniors Ben Martin and Simon Merry. Ian Abraham won the seniors with a return of 153, with Ray Roberts taking the runner-up spot with 155. Ashraph Ali walked away with the super seniors category with 149, while Robert Grell followed with 151. Tracey Clarke (153) copped the women’s flight, with fellow junior Diana Torry three shots adrift.
